They expected barbed wire and brutality what they found in Oregon felt like paradise. After brutal Atlantic crossings in 1943, thousands of German POWs were sent to Camp Adair and satellite camps across Oregon. Under the Geneva Convention, the U.S. Army fed them the same rations as American soldiers over 3,500 calories a day and paid them 80 cents for farm and lumber work. Declassified reports and POW diaries describe shock at fair treatment, baseball games, and access to libraries. For men captured after North Africa and Normandy, the American homefront rewrote everything they believed about their enemy. Sometimes, heaven arrives wearing a uniform you feared most.
