SMART HIGHWAYS is a sustainable infrastructure project by Studio Roosegaarde, led by Daan Roosegaarde, developed in collaboration with Heijmans. The project explores how light, energy, and interaction can transform roads into adaptive, energy-neutral systems for the future. The first realized concept within Smart Highways is Glowing Lines, road markings that absorb solar energy during the day and emit a soft glow at night for up to eight hours. Instead of conventional street lighting, the road itself becomes a luminous landscape, reducing energy consumption while enhancing visibility and spatial experience. The first pilot of Glowing Lines was implemented on the N329 near Oss, marking a shift toward infrastructure that communicates directly with its environment. The project is designed for international scalability, adapting to different climates, traffic systems, and landscapes. Additional Smart Highway concepts include Dynamic Paint, which responds to temperature changes; Interactive Light, which activates only when vehicles approach; Induction Priority Lane, enabling electric vehicles to charge while driving; and Road Printer, allowing flexible, on-demand road markings. Together, these innovations aim to create roads that automatically adapt to traffic conditions, weather, and energy needs. Smart Highways represents a fusion of design, technology, and engineering. Studio Roosegaarde contributes conceptual vision and interaction design, while Heijmans provides technical expertise and large-scale infrastructural execution. The collaboration reimagines the Dutch landscape as a living system rather than static infrastructure. The project has received international recognition, including the Dutch Design Award, Accenture Innovation Award, and the INDEX Award 2013.
