Autumn. The season of harvest and turning. The sun sinks lower, gilding fields and woodland with copper and flame. Hedgerows hang with berries, orchards bow beneath their fruit, and the days grow shorter, drawing us into the warmth of hearth and home. It is a time of gathering and gratitude. The labours of spring and summer now come to their reward. Granaries fill, apples are pressed, and the air carries the scent of woodsmoke, damp earth, and the rustle of leaves in their final dance. Folklore, song, and story gather round the harvest fires. Autumn is a season steeped in tradition. The Ritual Year moves steadily on, each festival marking the turning wheel of rural life. Michaelmas heralds endings and new beginnings, while harvest feasts recall ancient prayers of thanks. We celebrate the heritage of traditional crafts, the ways things are made by hand. Allhallowstide reminds us of those that have come before, the moments where life and death intertwine and the border between worlds becomes very grey. At the Museum, these rhythms endure - woven into the crafts, labours, and celebrations that fill our historic homes and fields. Children crunch leaves beneath their boots, animals are brought in from pasture, and the glow of lanterns pierces the gathering dusk. All around, life slows, deepens, and reflects the passage of time. The Weald & Downland is alive with autumn’s story. Come and experience the Ritual Year and the changing seasons of our Museum.
