Exit projections show Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) winning up to 328 of the 465 seats in the powerful lower house — one of the party’s strongest results ever. Together with coalition partner Japan Innovation Party (Ishin), the ruling bloc has achieved a two-thirds supermajority, allowing it to override the upper chamber and fast-track legislation. Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, has drawn comparisons to Britain’s former leader Margaret Thatcher and is expected to push ahead with plans to strengthen Japan’s defences — a move that has raised concerns in Beijing, which accuses her of reviving Japan’s militaristic past.
