The Labour MP's speech addressed the ongoing dispute in the Labour Party over the expulsion of activist Sharon Atkin, who had accused the party of racism. On 23 April 2023, the Labour Party announced that Diane Abbott had been suspended as a Labour MP pending an investigation into a letter she wrote to the Observer newspaper on the subject of racism.
