Ikaria (or Ikariá or Nikaria) is one of the biggest islands in the Eastern Aegean Sea, covering 255 square kilometres with a coastline of 160 kilometres. Both the island and the Sea (Ikarian) is named after Icarus, the son of Daedalus, who, as legend has it, fell into the sea as he was trying to fly higher than his father using wings made of wax. The capital of the island, Agios Kirikos, is located on the southeast side of the island, while Evdilos, on the north side, is the second busiest place on Ikaria. The geographical features of the island, which is mostly mountainous, create contrasts in its morphology.
