The incredible true story of Honest Ed's: Toronto's legendary discount store that operated from 1948 to 2016 at Bloor and Bathurst. In 1948, Ed Mirvish cashed his wife's life insurance for $214 and opened a bargain basement with merchandise on orange crates. By 1952, Honest Ed's was grossing $2 million annually, pioneering Canada's discount retail model. The store became a Toronto icon with its 23,000-bulb marquee (largest outside Vegas), hand-painted pun signs, free Christmas turkeys, and massive birthday parties drawing 50,000+ people. The maze-like store eventually occupied an entire city block. Beyond retail, Ed Mirvish saved the Royal Alexandra Theatre in 1963 and created Toronto's Entertainment District. The family accidentally built Mirvish Village, an artistic community of galleries and studios. Despite never operating at a loss, Honest Ed's couldn't compete with big retail shops, online shopping, and Toronto's gentrification. Ed died in 2007; the store sold for $100 million in 2013 and closed December 31, 2016. Today, luxury apartments stand where bargain hunters once roamed. But the legacy of "There's no place like this place, anyplace" lives on. #HonestEds #TorontoHistory #EdMirvish #TorontoStores
