Degrees of freedom (DoF) is a concept that appears in both statistics and robotics, but it means very different things in each context. DoF ~ In Statistics: Degrees of freedom refer to the number of independent values or quantities that can vary in an analysis without violating any constraints. Example: If you are calculating the sample variance of 5 data points, you're estimating the variance using the sample mean. Since the mean is already calculated from the data, only 4 of the values can vary freely (the 5th is constrained by the mean). So, the degrees of freedom = n − 1 = 4. In general: • Used in: t-tests, ANOVA, regression, chi-squared tests. • Represents: The amount of independent information available to estimate parameters. • Formula depends on: Number of observations and number of estimated parameters. DoF ~ In Robotics / Mechanical Systems: Degrees of freedom refer to the number of independent movements a robot or mechanical system can make in space. Example: A robotic arm in 3D space can: • Move along x, y, z (3 translational DoF), • Rotate around x, y, z axes (3 rotational DoF). So, it can have up to 6 degrees of freedom (like a human arm).
