Attempting to ward off the overindulgence of Christmas holidays, Mel & I set off to Hike the 45 miles Cleveland Way stretch from Saltburn to Scarborough setting off at 02:30 hours heading east into the darkness along the cliff top. The wind was gusting to 40 MPH, and we had to put our waterproof trousers and jackets on as we were also met by the rain. We had to leave the waterproofs on for the entire hike. The cliff top paths were sloppy and Slippy with mud which made the going twice as hard as we planned, and this cost us a couple of hours. We stopped at Sandsend, near Whitby for breakfast and Robin Hoods Bay for a late lunch including an egg and bacon pie with a bottle of old peculiar. We also carried a fair amount of food and to keep fuelled for the hike and we carried 4 litres of water each and a flask of coffee each. As we approached the hotel in Scarborough we were about out of water. The weather was cold, and it rained frequently so the phrase "no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing made perfect sense. As you can imagine we were well prepared for any eventuality. Each of us carrying 11 KG weight in our backpacks. Whilst I thought I had enough spare batteries for my GoPro - the very freezing weather reduced the battery life and therefore I was unable to film the last 12 Kilometres. The last 15 K was extremely hard on our legs and feet, partly due the extra slipping and sliding in the incessant, never-ending mud. We got to the Hotel at around 21:45 on Saturday evening with the total hike taking around 19 hours including breakfast and lunch breaks.
