There’s a good reason for their sudden rise in popularity and appeal. They meet a real psychological need for people who want purpose, meaning, and structure — things that these people otherwise wouldn’t be able to obtain in other places. As technological advancements made our world bigger by the day, new religious movements provided an illusion of comfort in people by giving them decisive answers in an ever-confusing world. In this state of vulnerability, it's no wonder why most spiritual leaders took advantage of it for their benefit — some of which took this to the extreme. It’s the reason why the term “new religious movements” is widely considered as a euphemism for “cult” and is viewed with suspicion. Even if most of these new religious movements aren’t violent, it doesn’t help that some of them are propagating dangerous ideas and conspiracy theories. Furthermore, when criticisms were raised against these new religious movements, some of them would do anything to suppress it. Scientology was guilty in the latter. However, there’s another religious organization out there that was known to do both of these actions. Not only that, but they’re also rich and influential — establishing their political party and group, as well as their anime films. All in the pursuit of their Utopia. This is the story of Happy Science. • Timestamps 00:00 - Introduction 02:50 - Early Life of an Eventual Savior 05:23 - Thus Came the Revelation 08:59 - Ditching All Secular Pursuits 11:50 - Starting Small and Modest 15:04 - To The Major Leagues 18:15 - "Believe in the Eternal Buddha!" 22:47 - The Friday Affair 27:14 - Feud With a Death Cult 29:25 - Waning Frenzy of the Happies 33:51 - Branching Out To The World, With Hate 38:53 - Contemporary Nonsense 42:53 - They Don't Like You Talking 51:45 - A Message To The Lost Souls • Special Thanks to Sarah Hightower, Fujikura Yoshiro, Shoko Egawa and Masaki Kito! / nezumi_ningen / suspendednyorai / amneris84 / masaki_kito • References https://www.notion.so/References-7b68... • Music and sound effects provided by Epidemic Sound. https://www.epidemicsound.com/ • Additional video by Envato Elements. https://elements.envato.com/ • Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for fair use for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, scholarship, and research.
