The first telephone service in Nepal was established by Shree 3 Chandra Shamsher in 1973 BS. The telephone service was called ‘Shree Chandra Telephone.’ During that time, the receipt was issued in the name of ‘Shree Chandra Telephone’ after the payment of the telephone bill. For the establishment of the first telephone, in 1972 BS, British engineer was appointed as an expert. They established a telephone office near Tundikhel. And, Tundikhel to Birgunj was connected by naked copper wire through the wooden poles. In this way, the Trunk Telephone service of Magento technology was started. The technology conducted through the naked wire was called as ‘Open wire magneto.’ To connect the wire from Kathmandu to Birgunj, the route of Thankot, Chisapani Gadhi, Bhimphedi Bhaise, Hetauda, and Amalekhgunj was selected. The telephone was connected to different places. People had to receive the call on the basis of the number of rings. Moreover, there was a system established to call and contact neighboring India. In this way, from the very beginning, an international call was available in Nepal. The telephone service was opened for all the general public on Jestha 1, 1974 BS. During the reign of Juddha Shamsher, the Telephone exchange of 25 lines was established near Ranipokhari in 1992 BS. The trunk telephone line reached from Kathmandu to Birgunj was later extended to Rajbiraj in 1994 BS. In the same year, a small automatic 10 lines telephone was established in Kathmandu and was available to Dhankuta in the east and Bhairahawa in the west. The telephone with the magnetar system was worth Rs. 1 lakh 68 thousand and 9 hundred. Later in 1998 BS, the trunk line was extended farther to Biratnagar from Rajbiraj and from Birtangar to Dhankuta. It is found that the public used the telephone at that time in these areas. For a word, the telephone bill cost 3 Paisa at that time but the service was limited to Shree Teen, Shree Chaar, Munsi Khana, Thana, and some governmental offices. At the time of Mohan Shamsher, the telephone service was extended to Palpa and Nepalgunj, and until 2007 BS, it reached Gorkha, Kunchcha, Pokhara, Kushma, and finally Palpa. At the time of King Mahendra, Telecommunication Department (Dursanchar Bibhaag) was established in the 2016 BS. Soon after trilateral assistant agreement established between Nepal, India, and America. After the agreement along with the construction of exchange building in Sundhara, 1000 lines capacity automatic exchange, 120 lines PAB box in Singhadurbar, Aakaashwaani Sewa in many places, and 58 SFB Mark IV for extension was provided by America to Nepal. In 2025 BS after the demand from different organizations and public, under the plan of 4000 lines' telephone service in the valley 600 lines exchange service and 400 lines in Sundhara was established. ............................................
