In a season of massive public restrictions and closed buildings, Larry Osborne shares why he tells his coaching clients to slow down and think through three things no one is talking about before deciding to reopen their doors. The three things are: …Quality …Children …Singing While there are lots of reasons to reopen our churches as soon as possible, there’s a grave danger in too quickly abandoning our online focus in order to reopen too soon. And it’s not just the risk of Covid-19 infections. In the rush to reopen, nobody seemed to notice: (1) Social distancing most often creates an awful worship experience. Until we can provide something worth returning to, it’s best to stay online or if need be, offer physical worship services as an option for the few who want it rather than attempting provide something for the majority of the flock. (2) Children don’t do social distancing well. Most will come out of a strictly socially distanced classroom reluctant to come again. And if we bring them into our worship services, we’ve just added one more negative factor to an already dreadful worship service. (3) Singing in close quarters has proven to be one of the best ways to spread the Covid-19 virus. Solving that by singing too far apart (or with masks) creates another obstacle to a quality worship experience. It will be one more strike against an already cringeworthy service. None of this is to say that we shouldn’t reopen the doors as soon as we can while providing a positive experience for those who attend. It’s worth doing if it’s better experience than online (even if only for some). But doing so too quickly will inevitably produce more damage than good for your church and the kingdom - especially if it means reducing your focus on providing the best online worship experience possible.
