A café cultured old-timer on the run from the reaper. Ballad of the Bean is a poetical, musical, graphical, light-hearted look at cafe culture, together with life, death, the universe and everything. It began as a lockdown discussion between writer, Martin Riley and his old mate and collaborator, composer and musician Jack Glover, about how much they missed hanging out in cafes. As they talked Jack improvised some jazzy blues on the piano and inspired by this, Martin wrote Ballad of the Bean. Jack then created the original music to go with it. This film of the Ballad is illustrated, edited and directed by another long-time friend and collaborator, John Coombes. You may spot some sneaky references to their previous projects in the artwork. It was filmed during lockdown by Rebecca Riley on an iPhone 8 using a Rode smartLav+ microphone. It is a Stairwell Production for Bikeshed Digital Media. Stairwell Production works like the water cooler. It's an artistic no-man’s land, an extension of “the shed” where people can meet on equal terms. All characters portrayed in this film, including the narrator, are fictitious, therefore any resemblance to any character living or dead is entirely unintentional. Having said that Martin has spent most of his life in Yorkshire, does drink Guinness, wears a scarf and is known to frequent cafes. Hope you enjoy Ballad of the Bean.
