This one’s a tribute to the legendary Dick Dale, the King of Surf Guitar! 🌊🏄‍♂️ Back in 1979, my band, The Del Capris, took on this electrifying tune, playing the Beach Boys' version, which stayed true to Dale’s iconic take on Misirlou. I’ve always been captivated by the double harmonic major scale—also known as the Byzantine scale or Hijaz maqam in Arabic music. Its exotic, fiery sound, with that flat 2nd and flat 6th, gives Misirlou its unmistakable flavor. This song has deep roots in the Eastern Mediterranean, with origins lost to time. But in 1962, Dick Dale transformed it into a high-energy, pulse-pounding rock guitar masterpiece. The story goes that a young fan bet Dale he couldn’t play a song using just one string—so, drawing from his Lebanese heritage and memories of his uncle playing Misirlou on the oud, Dale cranked up the tempo and made history. His surf rock version lit up the U.S. music scene and later became even more legendary thanks to Pulp Fiction. Dale’s blazing fast picking and raw energy made this track unforgettable, and it's been inspiring guitarists ever since!
