The African serval is a medium-sized wild cat native to Africa, known for its long legs, large ears, and a golden-yellow coat with black spots and stripes that provide camouflage. It is a solitary, carnivorous hunter that preys on rodents, birds, and insects, using its keen hearing and powerful leaps to hunt. While these cats are a unique part of the ecosystem, keeping them as pets is discouraged by animal welfare organizations due to their wild nature and specialized needs. Body: Slender with very long legs relative to its body size, which are the longest of any cat. Head: Small head with large, rounded ears for locating prey in tall grass. Coat: Golden-yellow to buff with black spots and stripes that provide camouflage. The pattern can vary, with woodland servals often having more spots. Tail: Short and typically tipped with black. Size: Stands 21–24 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 20–40 pounds. Habitat: Found in savannas, grasslands, and wetlands across most of Africa, preferring areas near water and tall vegetation. Diet: Carnivorous, with a primary diet of rodents like vlei rats, small birds, frogs, and insects. Hunting: They use their excellent hearing to locate prey and can leap more than 6 feet into the air to pounce on it. Social structure: Solitary and territorial, marking their range with feces and saliva.
