For years, Austin resident Lindsey Hollmann-Butz suspected her painful periods were more than routine cramps. Her search for answers eventually led her and her husband, Zach, to Dr. Anthony Propst, where she was diagnosed with endometriosis, a condition affecting about 1 in 10 women and up to 50% of patients seeking fertility care. Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus and is commonly associated with pelvic pain and infertility. Because it can only be definitively diagnosed through surgery, many patients experience years-long delays before receiving confirmation. To protect Lindsey’s future fertility, Dr. Propst recommended creating embryos through IVF before surgery, followed by robotic-assisted excision of endometriosis lesions. The coordinated approach allowed the couple to move forward with confidence, even in the face of uncertainty. As Endometriosis Awareness Month approaches in March, Lindsey’s story underscores the importance of listening to symptoms, advocating for care, and working with a specialized medical team, because when it comes to endometriosis, it truly does take a team.
