Fighting games. Don't get me wrong, there are a couple of really good ones hiding in there. But, by and large, Nintendo's 5th generation console wasn't particularly friendly to your tastes if your tastes involved beating the hell out of your friends with some murder-demon with bulging biceps. And, given that my buddy Diego and I were way, way into fighting games at the time, as well as the skimpy pickings, especially for '97, well, we both picked up Dark Rift so we could continue our friendly rivalry. Dark Rift is actually the sequel to another fighting game called Criticom, something which I didn't know until years later when I picked the latter title up on the Sega Saturn of all things. In fact, just looking at the graphics, backgrounds, the style of the game and the large stills, which were obviously supposed to be full-motion CGI, I'd guess that Dark Rift began life as an intended sequel to Criticom on both the PSX and Saturn. And that's neither here nor there, because it's a pretty lousy fighter. My positive points are the CGI images looked very nice back in the day, especially for a system which still used cartridges. The 64 was notorious at the time for having extremely sophisticated colored lighting effects, and they're used to a pretty effective extent in this game. The character designs ARE kind of interesting, and while only Sonork and Demonica were actually in Criticom, everyone else does have some connection to that previous title. Another of Gore's species was around, for instance, or Eve made the killer SID robots from the first game. The continuity is appreciated, is what I'm saying, even though I didn't KNOW there was continuity until over a decade later. The music isn't bad, but it's not fantastic. And that's about it. As a fighter, the controls are sluggish and finicky, with special moves that demand precise and rather slow inputs to pull them off. This tends to make combat overall very dull and uninteresting. The vocals are very weak. I can actually remember that being a huge complaint back in the day. And the CPU has the brains of a garbanzo bean. As you can see, once you reach a certain round, they can all be suckered with the same method. Get them to run at you (which they will, eventually), jump back, hit them on the way down, pounce attack while they're laid out, back off, rinse and repeat. It makes playing through the game to see all the endings a chore rather than a treat. Demitron requires a slight change in tactics, since he prefers to either teleport or pull that unblockable teleport drop. But I wrote a FAQ for this years ago on GameFAQS, and it's literally almost only what I wrote above. One or two of these problems might have been acceptable, but Dark Rift gets dragged down by the weight of all of its issues, settling somewhere below mediocre. And just to let you know, the game is actually set to best of 5 rounds by default. However, I knew what I was getting into, and with this taking 5 hours already, I think I made the right decision to drop the win requirements by a round. Unless you WANTED the endurance test of watching me do the same thing over and over and over. Despite my personal fondness for this one, Dark Rift is a crummy fighting game. And I think Diego and I even knew it at the time, because after a few goes with it, this one went out of rotation and never came back in. Still, it reminds me of being 17-18 again, leading into that first year living on my own. Also, I wanted to point out that it sounds like Demitron says 'Yeah...fuck you!' when he wins (it's the same sound effect for when he throws someone). And since we were stoned all the time back in the day, Diego and I found that pretty funny. And you need to take what positives you can get, because Dark Rift doesn't provide many. 3/10
