Haste the Day performing "Gnaw" on night 4 of 4, live at HiFi. From my first true experiences getting to know them during the Attack Of the Wolf King tour, to their final show in 2011, followed by reunions in 2014 and 2015, it's been thrilling to follow Haste the Day, attending every show ever since for the last 13 years. Having previously caught their Furnace Fest performance prior to this string of hometown shows, I was riding high on feelings of anticipation for a much more intimate experience: 4 shows, back-to-back, packed tight with folks who were ready and waiting for a deluge of songs from across their entire catalogue. I've always struggled with the concept of idolization and fandom. It's easy to forget that all of the people we love and look up to are simply human; they just happen to have seemingly super-human talents we really appreciate. Through those talents, they create art that can help us to understand our struggles, to give us the strength when the world becomes too heavy upon our shoulders, to inspire us to open doors to peace in our cyclone lives. It was during these 4 nights I allowed myself moments, albeit brief, to be a fan of my friends, taking my place stage left, screaming all the words, allowing myself to be vulnerable and remembering that it was through my own immense experiences with loss that I found myself in this community of incredible people. I am incredibly grateful to have had so many opportunities to blur the lines between spectator, a helping hand behind the scenes and a friend to many artists. My memories with Haste the Day, in particular, will always be of the most important ones I carry. They're where I learned to silence my mind, in a way to better use my ears to the stories whirling around me, to remember that what makes the world so interesting is how those stories intersect, creating avenues in which we traverse to-and-fro from one another, in hopes that we use them again to cross paths once more.
