한국 요소 대란 배경엔 중국-호주 갈등...미중 갈등이 공급망에 영향 South Korea's recent urea crisis seems to have arisen from China-Australia diplomatic rows. Beijing stopped importing coal, crucial in making urea. While trying to resolve the shortage, Seoul's government is bracing for long term supply chain problems. Yoon Jung-min explains further. The reason behind South Korea's urea shortage lies in a diplomatic conflict between China and Australia, and more fundamentally, the U.S.-China rivalry. South Korea is heavily dependent on China when it comes to urea imports, but China imposed pre-export inspections on the chemical compound last month. This comes as China faces a shortage of coal, which it uses to make urea, following Beijing's import restrictions on coal from Australia. A few years ago, Australia joined the U.S.' move to ban China's Huawei 5G networks and in response, China has started restricting imports from Australia. Amid the intensifying U.S.-China rivalry, Australia seems to have shifted more toward Washington recently, having joined the Quad and the AUKUS deal. Experts say geopolitical and supply chain issues cannot be taken separately. "Current geopolitical conflict between two major countries will continue to increase the tension for economic and industry situations for many countries, especially in East Asian countries where the global supply chain has been very strongly implemented for a long time." China's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that Beijing has taken into account the demand by South Korea, and it's currently in active discussions with Seoul to resolve the issue. It added the export inspection was not designed to target any specific country. As for a longer-term strategy, South Korea's foreign ministry created a taskforce this month to cover economy and security in order to preemptively tackle supply chain issues. The taskforce encompasses a broad range of supply chain issues, ranging from to those associated with semiconductors and batteries to urea and other materials. "Not just the recent supply chain issue, but there are increasing intertwined issues between economy, security, technology and more. We believe it's urgent that we need more intensive measures, with expertise." Sources say the government will have to pay more attention from now on to the increasing global uncertainty for industries and businesses, seemingly resulting from political rivalry or historical grievances.
