Shama explores the connections and boundaries that exist between boths fields in our brain. Shama Rahman has a PhD in the ‘Neuroscience of Musical Creativity using Complexity Tools’, and is a professional actor and musician. She has investigated emergent patterns in the electrical brain activity of Jazz and Classical pianists during the generation of two types of musical creativity: Improvisation and Interpretation. She is the co-author of a book chapter ‘Creativity in the Twenty First Century: Multidisciplinary Contributions to the Science of Creative Thinking’ by Springer due to be published summer 2015. As a musician, some of her music is conceptually inspired by her research. She is a multi-instrumentalist and performs around the world with her quintet as a Sitarist/Vocalist. She is also the founder of a Science/Performing Arts outfit, ‘Jugular: Joining Head and Heart’ with a powerful vision: showing that science, art, philosophy and entertainment are equally valid and fundamental parts of culture. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
