Multimedia artist Sijia Chen was taught the intricate skill of Chinese paper-cutting (Jianzhi) by her father, a master of the art. Traditionally used to decorate windows and doors in China, Chen blends paper-cut with collage and painting to produce her own take on the ancient art form. Born in China and now living in the US, Chen became fascinated by the story of human migration, which became the foundation of her artistic inspiration. Unlike the paper used historically for paper-cutting, Chen sources the material for her collage paintings from the Chinese community. In her ongoing series entitled 'Cross the Water and Climb the Mountain' (meaning a long and challenging journey), Chen includes a variety of documents that speak of the uprooting and constant movement of people and the various challenges they face: immigration papers, visa applications, personal photographs, magazine articles, restaurant menus and cultural event leaflets. Here, Chen demonstrates her skill and artistry while discussing her own immigrant experience, culture and identity. 00:00 Introduction to multimedia artist Sijia Chen as she discusses being an immigrant 00:37 Chen in London's Chinatown collecting material 00:50 What is traditional paper-cut? 01:32 'A Great Disruption' on display at the V&A 01:53 Inspiration for the paper used in Chen's work 03:48 The story of the recurring bicycle motif in her work 04:51 How Chen's work differs from her father's 06:15 Integrating paper-cut into contemporary practice Chen's work, 'A Great Disruption', is currently on display in V&A South Kensington's China Gallery (Room 44): https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1...
