The GAR Museum of Philadelphia presents: Medal of Honor by Kyle Purchase The presentation will discuss the origins and heroic stories of the nation’s highest military honor, the Medal of Honor. Throughout the American Civil War, there were over 1,400 acts of sacrifice, gallantry, valor, and bravery in defense of the Union that were worthy of the bestowment of the Medal of Honor. Some of these stories will be told by reading the official Medal of Honor citations of these recipients. Someone has once said that ‘every man has two deaths: when he is buried in the ground, and the last time someone says his name.’ Hopefully this presentation will keep the memory of these Medal of Honor recipients alive as well as provide a reminder that freedom is not free.” Kyle is a graduate from Widener University in political science and international relations and from Temple University with a master’s in public policy. He currently works for Pennsylvania Legislative Services where he is a Legislative Reporting Analyst covering daily events and committee meetings in Harrisburg. He is a member of two camps in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; Baker-Fisher Camp 101 where he serves as Camp Council and Patriotic Instructor, and Gen. John F. Hartranft Camp 15 where he serves as Commander. He is also a member of the Bucks County Civil War Roundtable Library and Museum and is a GAR Civil War Museum and Archive Board Member and the Museum’s Secretary.
