By William Shakespeare Translated by: Eli Bizaui Directed by Noam Shmuel Set Design: Zeev Levi Lighting: Keren Granek Music: Eyall Weiss Costumes: Avia Bash Video Nimrod Zin The plot takes place in the Italian city of Verona against the backdrop of a longstanding feud between the Montague and Capulet families. Romeo, a Montague, attends a masked ball at the Capulet home, where he meets Juliet, a Capulet, and a spark of love ignites between the two. Late that night Romeo sneaks into the Capulet courtyard and observes Juliet on her balcony. After declaring their love for one another they decide to wed secretly. Friar Laurence marries them in the hope of reconciling the two families, but the animosity between them only intensifies, leaving destruction and death in its wake. The lovers decide to flee their homes in pursuit of their happiness, but a twist of fate leads to their tragic end. Romeo and Juliet, penned by dramatic genius William Shakespeare, is considered the greatest love story of all time. Since being written at the end of the sixteenth century there have been countless stage productions of the play, one of the most renowned of which was directed by John Gielgud and starred Laurence Olivier and Gielgud alternately playing Romeo, with Peggy Ashcroft as Juliet, and served as the basis for cinematic adaptations (the most renowned of which was directed by Franco Zeffirelli), musical compositions, dance, opera, musicals (West Side Story) and even parodies (one of which is Oh, Oh Juliet! by Ephraim Kishon). A new production of Romeo and Juliet, directed by Noam Shmuel (Games in the Backyard, Gaza 17), is now being presented in new, contemporary and dynamic attire in a space specially designed for the play. The two aristocratic families from Renaissance Verona have been replaced by two crime families, but the tragic story of the star-crossed lovers, who pay the price for their love with their lives, remains as moving, shocking and heartrending as it was 400 years ago.
