I can't say too much, just that this video is my personal appeal for help for our beloved Apalachicola Bay which is seriously ailing right now. For yet undetermined reasons, several of our important historical seafood harvests are declining, and as a result, there is deep concern about our local economy, which depends so heavily upon this resource. For example, there are over 1600 oyster harvesting licensees for Apalachicola Bay, and in the past, over 90% of the oysters produced in all of Florida have come from the Apalachicola Bay shellfish harvesting areas which are managed by the State Department of Agriculture. These are some of the last wild-caught (not cultured) oysters in the country, prized world-wide for their distinctive on-the-half-shell flavor. The annual harvest of all kinds of seafood from this Bay is worth millions, and the harvest decline extends to bay shrimp and blue crab as well. In addition, Apalachicola Bay and its estuaries serve as vital breeding and nursery grounds for all manner of species that comprise our sports fisheries and commercial fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico. We must expend every effort and resource available to find out what is happening and rectify it, before this bay goes the way of other great bays in the East, like the Chesapeake. And just as importantly, we must provide support, emotionally, financially, and job training-wise to sustain the seafood harvesters in the interim, and allow them to diversify their income stream. We must take a long hard look at diversification county-wide, so that we can take the pressure off the Bay while she undergoes restoration, and hopefully, heals. If you can help with your ideas, expertise, or with financial or in-kind contributions, please contact the Franklin County Seafood Workers Association via their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/franklincountyseafoodworkersassociation Also please check out • Oyster Harvesting - Bedeque, PEI This is wonderful video about how wild oysters are harvested by tonging off Prince Edward Island in Canada. There, old-timers have already seen the effects of sea level rise. We were referred to this video by the Canadian fish harvesters organization.
