[Anchor Lead] President Moon Jae-in has apologized for government-led violence in the Jeju massacre of 1948 and promised to resolve issues relating to the incident. He also called on conservatives and progressives to compete under the principles of justice and fairness. [Pkg] The 70th memorial ceremony for the victims of the April 3rd incident in Jeju Island was held with some 15,000 survivors and families of the victims in attendance. President Moon Jae-in, the first incumbent president to attend the ceremony in 12 years, defined the April 3rd incident as a historical event in which innocent civilians were killed by the state. The president apologized for the government-led violence and promised to find out the truth about the April 3rd incident to bring justice to the victims and restore their honor. [Soundbite] Pres. Moon Jae-in : "Complete resolution of the April 3rd incident is going to build firm groundwork for reconciliation, unity, peace, and human rights that all Jeju people and Koreans hope for." He said the recovery of victims' remains will continue and compensation issues will be discussed with the National Assembly. President Moon also stressed that the conservative and progressive sides should compete and be evaluated under the principles of justice and fairness outside of the old framework of ideology. [Soundbite] Pres. Moon Jae-in : "If it's not just or fair, neither the conservative nor the progressive could be for the people." Leaders of both the ruling and opposition parties also attended the memorial service to pray for the victims of the tragic incident.
