Here are some quick tips on how to name and identify pseudostratified columnar epithelium. How to name epithelial tissues: 1. Number of layers 2. Shape of the cell Stratified = many layers Columnar = column-shaped cells Basal surface is on the BOTTOM. The basement membrane (the part that attaches epithelial tissue to other tissues) is also on the basal side. Apical surface = "top" side when you are looking at a profile view of a tissue. If a flat sheet of epithelial tissue is folded into a tube (think of a paper towel roll), the middle creates an open space called a lumen (the part of the paper towel roll that goes on the rack). The cells that make up the inside are the cells on the apical surface. Cilia = hairlike projections Goblet cells open up to the apical surface where they secrete mucin which is called mucus when it mixes with water. Form follows function!!! Use this principle to help you make sense of why you might find that particular cell or tissue in a certain part of the body. Leave your questions in the comments. Happy studying!
