Aldershot Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hampshire, around 35 miles/56km southwest of central London, is the town of Aldershot. Up until the 1850s Aldershot was a small village. Then in 1854, during the Crimean War, the government's war department bought up land in the area, establishing Aldershot Garrison. This subsequently became home to the British Army, and thus the population grew from 875 in 1851 to around 16,000 in 1861 according to the census. Cambridge Military Hospital was opened in Aldershot Garrison in 1879. This played a key role in the First World War where it received casualties directly from the Western Front. It was also the first place in the UK where plastic surgery was performed when a unit was set up to treat soldiers who had suffered facial wounds. In the 1970s the Wellington Shopping Centre was built, and Wellington Street and Union Street were pedestrianised. Thus much of the architecture seen in the town centre is 20th century. In 1974 Aldershot and nearby Farnborough merged their respective boroughs to form Rushmoor Borough Council. Here's a fun fact in closing: The Beatles played one of their smallest gigs ever in Aldershot. Only 18 people showed up, which was attributed to poor advertising.
