OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced significant policy changes for ChatGPT to protect underage users, following a Senate hearing on the harm AI chatbots can cause to minors. These changes mean ChatGPT will no longer engage in conversations about suicide or self-harm with users under 18, even in creative writing contexts. This announcement comes after a lawsuit from the family of Adam Raine, a teenager who died by suicide after, according to his father, ChatGPT spent months "coaching him toward suicide". During a Senate panel, Matthew Raine stated that the chatbot mentioned suicide 1,275 times in conversations with his son. To enforce these new rules, OpenAI is developing an "age-prediction system" and may ask for ID verification to differentiate between adult and teen users. For users identified as under 18, if suicidal ideation is detected, the company will attempt to contact the user's parents or, if necessary, the authorities. These safety measures build on previously announced parental controls, such as linking accounts and disabling chat history for teens. The hearing also highlighted the widespread use of AI companions among young people, with a Common Sense Media poll showing that three in four teens use them. If you or someone you know is considering suicide or is in crisis, help is available. In the US, you can call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at any time. Outside the US, the International Association for Suicide Prevention and Befrienders Worldwide provide lists of country-specific hotlines. #openai #chatgpt #samaltman #aisafety #teenmentalhealth
