Growing up average is not the main character in a movie energy...unless you get a makeover and are revealed to be pretty all along! The average person is perhaps the friend, the co-worker, the annoying nemesis, but never the one who "gets the girl" or whatever the prize of the movie may be. Every generation compares themselves to their peers, it's part of life, however our social "circles" have grown thanks to social media, expanding how many people we can compare ourselves to and "average" just doesn't cut it. This can affect our self image, our confidence and self esteem for years due to how conventional beauty is heralded as the best thing someone can be. And what about the darker side of never "measuring up"? Whether this means someone becomes reclusive, views conventionally attractive people as "bad", gets taken advantage of due to low self esteem, becomes the bully themselves, pursues surgery, or even engages in dangerous or risky behaviour...
