I don't often write like this because I find it a hard thing to do well, but this is one of my more overtly political songs. It's about the growing divide in the UK - and in a lot of countries, really - between the left and the right. Recently there was a massive far right rally in London and there were over 100,000 people and I just felt this utter despair. I literally saw nazi stickers stuck to lamp posts. It was surreal and disturbing. A couple days later and Donald Trump visited the UK, and it felt like a dark shadow falling across the country. These are scary times to be living in, especially in an age where news is constant and everywhere. I can't open my phone without seeing something. As I saw the state of decline around me, I felt the need to write about it. As I wrote, I considered the truth that everything comes and goes. There will always be some troubles. History might not necessarily repeat but it will rhyme. This song is about finding hope and resilience amid it all. We've lived through political turmoil before. We survived it, we'll survive again. Hope always prevails, I think. Light does too. Troubles do too, you know. That's just how it is; it's all part of life's balance. We may not like it, but we're only tricking ourselves if we believe we can root out the problem and expect it never to return. Troubles are like winter, no matter how warm the summer is, winter will come back around eventually. But so will spring. We have to believe in spring. Lyrics: I feel the wind, Come back in through the door. Winter’s coming back around. Wasn’t it summer just the day before? Where did it go? Can it be re-found? I’m in my room, staring at my screen, Tryna keep my mind off the street. They see the future as something they should keep, In a box and then push it down. I feel the pull of disillusionment, Guess it’s a commonplace feeling these days. I hear the fighting and rioting through my mobile phone, It seems the whole population is crazed. But when I walk downstairs and break my fast, I feel a kindness and warmth, the type that lasts. I wanna dive into that feeling now, Leave the arguments to the crowd. This’ll be the key, You can hold it and see, If it’s a perfect fit, Or if it’s something to leave, Behind in the wintry snowdrift. Troubles, troubles, Troubles, come back at night, Come back every morning. The grass is dead, When the don comes to the isle, And there is dread for a little while. And on the reel, there’s talk of peace at last, But my god, it vanishes so fast. I wanna cry, but my eyes are filled with stone, Cemented by all the years in the castle. Can you resign from your pessimistic post? Can we find a little hope after all? This’ll be the key, You can hold it and see, If it’s a perfect fit, Or if it’s something to leave, Behind in the wintry snowdrift. Troubles, troubles, Troubles, come back at night, Come back every morning. No, we’ll never escape, No, our shadows travel with us. No, we'll never escape, Eventually we all return to dust. No, we’ll never escape, No, we'll never escape, No, we'll never escape, Eventually we all return to dust. No, we'll never escape, No, our shadows travel with us. No, we’ll never escape, Our troubles are part of the trust, But we’ll always be brave, Yeah, we’ll always be brave. We may never escape, Eventually we’ll all return to our_ Troubles, troubles, Troubles, come back at night, Come back every morning.
