This is how I lower the pitch on a Legere bassoon reeds. The hot water is ~160' F. The adjustments, as you will see, are super easy. Repeat them as needed. Keep in mind that there is an initial "breaking in" period for these reeds - it takes me ~3 practice sessions to break in. After you have played on them for several weeks (months!) you might want to adjust them again. I've adjusted them a few different ways but have settled on this as the best approach to lowering the pitch and making the reed a little more vibrant without making the reed more resistant (throat mandrel). The plaque adjustment seems to have a much greater impact which is why I do that second and only if needed. I have been playing on my Legere bassoon reeds exclusively for over a year now. I keep telling myself I will make reeds this summer...but than, what's the point? Feel free to leave comments and questions. I have seen some pretty nasty comments about these reeds on Pinterest. Please be friendly and constructive. If you are still skeptical, please feel free to watch and listen to the Chinook Winds recordings and videos on YouTube and Soundcloud. Every recording since June 2014 is me playing on a Legere. Good luck and enjoy the ease of playing a Legere!
