Severn Valley Railway - Autumn Steam Gala - Thursday 17th September 2015

The premier gala event of the year, the Severn Valley Railway Autumn Steam Gala, has come around once again. With the railway celebrating its 50th Anniversary, it was expected that the railway would put on a show that lived up to the legend. Although while the line up was certainly worthy of a 50th anniversary, the weekend timetable was far from it, being one of the worst in years, with the intermediate locals and goods trains abandoned for a simple end to end timetable, supplemented by the Autotrain between Kiddeminster and Bewdley. This ultimately lead to my decision to attend the railway on the gala preview day on the Thursday, with all the guests running, as well as one of the star residents, it was certainly not a day to be ignored! The timetable, while again was a simple one, featured the main sets running from end to end, as well as a full line goods train doing two round trips during the day. There was also Driver Taster courses to see running between Kidderminster and Bewdley, as well as the Autotrain performing Royal Train duty, conveying The Duke of Gloucester between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade. The weather held out, with a mix of sun and overcast skies, meaning the day was still enjoyable, despite some engine troubles causing an ultimate 50 minute delay at the end of the day.
