France and Saudi Arabia have agreed to give more weapons to the militants operating in Syria. French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Monday, "Our approach to the situation is identical." He made the comment after holding talks with Saudi officials in the city of Jeddah. The French defense minister said Paris and Riyadh will support the so-called Syrian National Coalition and the Free Syrian Army "on the military level, as well as the humanitarian and political levels." Syrian military forces have reopened a key road linking the central heartland with the embattled northern province of Aleppo, following heavy clashes with militants. They took control of the road on Sunday night after engaging in a fierce battle with the militants. The route had been closed since August because of heavy fighting in the area. The development comes a week after army troops captured the strategic town of Khanaser near the road and flushed out insurgents in several surrounding villages. The Syrian army has made advances near the flashpoint city of Aleppo in the north of the country. On Tuesday, fierce fighting continued between militants and the Syrian soldiers in the region. The Syrian army also secured five villages in the south of the city. The Syrian soldiers' achievement led to the transfer of the first shipment of food and aid to Aleppo. "The clashes are still ongoing... Despite all the difficulties, we are pressing day and night until we meet our objectives," said a Syrian soldier.
