After leaving Pattaya, I planned to head to Rayong, but thanks to a mix-up at the bus station, I ended up in Ban Phe—a quiet seaside town I had never heard of. What was supposed to be a quick stopover turned into a few days of unexpected discoveries. Unlike Pattaya, which is known for its nightlife, Ban Phe is peaceful, laid-back, and largely untouched by mainstream tourism. It is best known as the gateway to Koh Samet, with ferries constantly shuttling tourists to the island. But instead of just passing through, I took the time to explore. I found the cheapest hostel I have stayed in so far in Thailand at just 200 Baht per night. The town itself is quiet, with a local market catering to those coming off the boats, and an expat community that has settled here for a slower pace of life. There is also a major new ferry terminal under construction, which could change things in the future. One of the biggest surprises was an International Kite Festival taking place while I was here—something I couldn’t even find any information about online. It felt like a hidden gem that most people overlook. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path town in Thailand where you can slow down and take in the local atmosphere, Ban Phe might surprise you. Would you stay in a random Thai town like this?
