Medium shot of Myers speaking STORYLINE: Speaking at the Ronald Reagan Library in California, United States Vice President Dick Cheney responded to the news of a powerful car bomb that destroyed a five-story hotel housing foreigners in central Baghdad on Wednesday night, killing at least 27 people and leaving a jagged crater just days before the anniversary of the start of the Iraq war. Cheney said, "The thugs and assassins in Iraq are desperately trying to shake our will. Just this morning they conducted a murderous attack on a hotel in Baghdad. Their goal is to prevent the rise of democracy, but they will fail." Meanwhile, the White House pledged not to let the new attack deter the Bush administration from working toward democracy in the country. "It is a terrible terrorist attack on innocent civilians but we will continue to help the Iraqi people move forward on democracy and freedom and stability in their country," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said. "This is a time of testing but the terrorists will not prevail." Earlier in the day, General Richard Myers painted the coalition forces operating in Iraq as successful. Speaking prior to the blast General Myers favourably compared the situation in Iraq to one year ago, citing the discovery of mass graves and mass casualties. Iraqi police and U-S soldiers said several people died when a huge car bomb destroyed a five-story hotel in central Baghdad on Wednesday night. President Bush was informed of the bombing before departing the White House Wednesday for a St. Patrick''''s Day luncheon on Capitol Hill.
