Today we come to a parish that covers a wide area, much wider than the small village at the centre of the parish does on its own. We begin there, but a lot of the landmarks to see in this one actually fall away from the village, which means there’s a bit of driving around to be done! We start at the church which once had John Wycliffe as it’s rector. He was the first man to translate The Bible into English, and was a renowned philosopher at Oxford University. The churchyard has a rather large memorial to Major Thomas Dalton as well, something which I initially missed whilst filming (thank heavens for The Picture Bit!) The Picture Bit also comes to my rescue when it comes to the castle here, which is not open to the public. It is known as Summer Castle at times, and was the site of a former Roman camp. It’s actually more of a castellated mansion, but one things for sure, the entrance gates make it look like a castle alright! They are to be found on the A15, Ermine Street, a Roman Road. Then there’s a lake, which is the source of the River Till, and Ancholme Head which is the source of the River Ancholme. That’s before we’ve even begun to discuss the RAF Ingham Heritage Centre which also lies in this parish on The Cliff.
