THE SONGBIRD: English soprano Carolyn Sampson was born in Bedford in 1974. She studied at Birmingham University and made her operatic debut singing Amore in Monteverdi's "L'incoronazione di Poppea" at the English National Opera. In 2006 she performed in Montpellier as Susanna and Adina. She sang the title role in the Boston Early Music Festival's production of Lully's "Psyché" in 2007, which was recorded and then nominated for a Grammy award. Sampson has risen to the top ranks of sopranos with many operatic and concert appearances in leading venues and dozens of commercial recordings and solo recitals CDs covering multiple genres, though she has retained a reputation as a baroque specialist. THE MUSIC: "La fida ninfa" (The Faithful Nymph, RV 714) is an opera by Antonio Vivaldi to a libretto by Scipione Maffei. It was first performed for the opening of the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona in 1732. Prominent among the singers engaged for the premiere was soprano Maria Giovanna Gasperini taking the role of the nymph Licori who sings perhaps the work's most famous aria, "Alma oppressa de sorte crudele."
