A talk and discussion led by David Warden. We only have fragments of the works of the original Stoics, such as Zeno of Citium. He founded the Stoic school of philosophy in Athens around 300 BCE. But we have much more extensive works from later Stoics including Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Epictetus. One of the key Stoic principles is that we react not to actual events but to the interpretations and beliefs we have about those events. This could explain why some people suffer from road rage whilst others seems placid and imperturbable in similar situations. How can we train ourselves to reduce mental disturbance and suffering, and enjoy life more? David will investigate the Stoics to see what they have to offer. David is Chairman of Dorset Humanists and a qualified humanistic counsellor. Dorset Humanists are a non-religious group of Humanists, Atheists & Agnostics who meet in Bournemouth, Dorset, England. www.dorsethumanists.co.uk
