Spoilers for the final episode .... Shunji, Shunji, Shunji...where do I even begin? Maybe I should start with Park Ki Woong. He is an amazing actor. Everyone talks about how epic Joo Won was in "Bridal Mask" which he most certainly was but Park Ki Woong deserves just as much attention. The transformation of Shunji's character is a bit unreal to watch. PKW put so much raw emotion into his character that the crazy that Shunji becomes is more than a bit terrifying to witness. I even read that PKW has nightmares because of how deeply he got into character...he did an insanely impressive job. Now for the character himself. Shunji is a really difficult character. He becomes the villain of BM but in the beginning, the true villain was KangTo. Shunji was a school teacher, happy to simply enrich the lives of children. He had a best-friend he considered closer than his own brother, and he serendipitously reunited with his first love. It was only when Shunji first sought revenge following the death of his brother than he begins his descent into madness. And what a descent it is. Slowly, he begins to lose his grasp on reality, even abusing MokDan as he blindly pursues Gaksital. And then he begins to suspect KangTo. From Shunji's perspective, KangTo's "betrayal" is absolute. Shunji doesn't know that KangSan was actually the original BM, and he also doesn't know how long KangTo and MokDan have been together. In Shunji's eyes, his entire friendship/brotherhood with KangTo was a lie, and even worse, Shunji's final grasp on reality- MokDan- chooses KangTo/Bridal Mask over Shunji. Of course, MokDan's decision makes sense, seeing as how Shunji has beaten and abused her, and even worse is a Japanese supoorter. Shunji's inability to grasp this is part of the reason he is such a complex character. While working on this video, I would cut apart a cute scene of Shunji riding his bike or something, and I'd be like, "Awe, I love this guy so much!" Then I'd go to another part of the video and Shunji would be going through one of split-personality phases (murderous and then smiling like a charming school-boy) and I would be sooo creeped out by his character. And then he'd go beat up KangTo and I'd think "Die you bastard! Die!!!" Aisch, his character makes me conflicted. Do I hate him or do I love him?! I certainly don't love to hate him, I wish he could have stayed nice and sane...though then show would not have been nearly as compelling to watch. I'll just say that Shunji is an "interesting" and "unique" character. I do love Park Ki Woong though. He's now playing the second male lead on "Full House Take 2." I've only seen two episodes so far, so I can't really judge this "sequel" yet, but I like PKW's character. He plays one-half of pop duo Take One. He is rather hilarious, sweet, and vain. Pretty polar opposite of Shunji. IDK how I feel about the romance/love triangle, but I adore the bromance between Park Ki Woong and No Min Woo... it's a pretty epic love/hate relationship that makes me smile. My goal with this video was to show what a complex character Shunji is. In a black and white world, he is the obvious villain of BM. However, if you consider all that his character goes through, and aren't biased to the Korean side of the Korea/Japan conflict, then it is impossible to say that he is truly evil...because he isn't. He is flawed and broken and was simply born on the wrong side of the war. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this video. I did not intend on writing a character analysis of Shunji but that kind of happened...sorry for boring you :P "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
