Lightroom Tutorial: How to make raw images look more like the JPEG previews you saw on the back of your camera. NOTE: In Lightroom Classic, Adobe moved Profiles to the top of the Basics Panel. New Lightroom users often wonder why the color and tone of their images change after they are imported. People often say their images look dull and flat. They looked beautiful on the back of their camera and when they first showed up in Lightroom after importing, but then the color changes and they look bad. What's going on? How can you get your photos to look better, more like they did on your camera? When you import your photos into Lightroom, what you see at first are the embedded jpeg thumbnails created by your camera. These are processed images based on your camera's settings. After you import your images Lightroom will generate a thumbnail preview based on Lightroom's default settings for your camera model and that replaces the jpeg thumbnail you saw briefly. Now your images may look kind of muddy and dull instead of bright and vibrant. But there's nothing wrong. You photos aren't "ruined." You are now seeing the unprocessed raw image. The great thing about RAW files, is that since they are all the raw data captured by your camera -- you can make any changes you want to how your photo is rendered without destroying the original data. So you can alter your image numerous times to get it the way you want it to look. Some people would rather have a place to start, a way to get their Raw files to look more like their jpeg previews before they begin their editing process. You can get your images to look "better" by creating a preset to use when importing. You can use the Camera Calibration panel to set what profile Lightroom should use when rendering your images. For example you can choose Portrait, Landscape, Color Vivid, and others. A good option is the Camera Standard Profile, it works well with most images. You can also make adjustments to the brightness or Contrast and save your settings as a User preset and then apply the preset when you import new images. A caution: there is no one setting that will be perfect for every image because photos are taken in different lighting under different circumstances and with different settings. But setting a Camera Calibration profile and maybe some other toning like Brightness, Contrast and Saturation is a good place to start. You can learn more about why your raw files look different from the JPEG previews in this article. https://forums.adobe.com/message/1466...
