In November 1330, deep in the narrow mountain passes of Transylvania, one of medieval Europe’s most devastating ambushes unfolded. The Battle of Posada was not a clash of equal armies—it was a masterclass in terrain, patience, and asymmetric warfare. After burning the Wallachian capital, King Charles I of Hungary led his army home through the Carpathians, believing the campaign was over. But high above the pass, Basarab I of Wallachia was waiting. What followed was a brutal, days-long slaughter. Outnumbered nearly six to one, Wallachian forces—peasants, shepherds, and mountain warriors—turned the landscape itself into a weapon. From the cliffs, they rained logs and boulders onto the trapped Hungarian column below. Armor became a liability. Cavalry collapsed. Escape was impossible. The defeat ended Hungarian ambitions over Wallachia and secured Basarab’s rule—shaping Eastern European history for centuries. This was not just a battle. It was a lesson written in stone, blood, and gravity.
