The Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility is one of the most important laws of microeconomics and a foundation concept for Class 11 / Intermediate Economics. This law explains consumer behavior and helps us understand why consumers are willing to pay less for additional units of a commodity. According to this law, when a consumer consumes more and more units of the same commodity, the additional satisfaction (marginal utility) obtained from each extra unit goes on diminishing, while total utility may increase at a decreasing rate. For example, when a hungry person eats the first apple, they get high satisfaction. The second apple gives less satisfaction, the third even less, and after some point, additional apples may give zero or even negative utility.
