In this lecture, Professor Ebrahim Moosa explores the concept of critical traditionalism—an approach that engages the Islamic intellectual tradition with both empathy and critical rigor while situating it within the complexities of modern knowledge. Confronting the inherited divide between theology and religious studies in the academy, Moosa examines how Muslim thinkers, from Ibn ʿArabi and Ibn Khaldūn to Iqbal and Izetbegović, have grappled with the intertwined roles of reason, revelation, and history in shaping moral and spiritual life. This talk traces how ethical and theological reasoning evolved across time, emphasizing the necessity of historicizing tradition rather than idealizing it. By rethinking how history, philosophy, and theology can coexist as mutually illuminating disciplines, critical traditionalism offers a framework for Muslims—and for scholars more broadly—to navigate modernity without severing continuity with the past.
