This week’s #fridaysews video is all about the Style Arc Kennedy Hoodie. This is my second attempt at making this hoodie and this time I’ve incorporated some changes to the pattern to limit bulk, but have not compromised the design. Though I did swap out the cuffs and waistband and used instead ribbing that matches the colours in my sweatshirt fabrics. I’ve made the Kennedy hoodie before in fabric from my stash. It was a jersey knit. Not ideal fabric as it was very stretchy, but for a first attempt at this pattern it has made a very wearable garment. I love it and it’s getting plenty of wear. I learnt a lot from my first make of this hoodie. Style Arc’s sparse instructions make you stop and think through it step. So making a second Kennedy was a lot quicker in bringing it all together. As mentioned in a previous video the weight and composition of fabric is quite important as it enable you to select the correct fabric for your garment. As you can see from the two fabrics used for this hoodie, the orange fabric’s weight of 285gsm (65% cotton/ 35% polyester) is definitely more sturdy than the 240gsm (95% cotton/ 5% polyester) floral vine fabric. But using the lighter of the two fabrics as an accent worked really well. Obviously you can sew this hoodie all in one or the other of these fabrics, but I think, well for me anyway, that the two fabrics work well together. And there’s enough fabric left to make more garments. I have a few ideas for the future.
