STORYLINE: Venezuela's parliament on Thursday postponed its final debate on an amnesty bill that could free hundreds of detained opposition members, activists and human rights defenders. Although lawmakers approved portions of the measure, they ultimately voted to suspend the session to resolve some sticking points, including whether people who left the country to avoid detention can be granted amnesty. Relatives of detainees who were expected to be released with the approval were left disappointed as they waited outside the Boleíta detention center. “How much longer are they going to play with us?” asked Sandra Rosales, whose husband is detained at the facility. “My children ask, ‘When is my father coming out?’ It really is very tough”. The legislative friction was seen in the streets as Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello led a rally. "The Amnesty Law has conditions, limits, conditions to expire, and it has principles," Cabello told government supporters. He further challenged the opposition’s calls to repeal the laws that the government used to charge the detainees when "whenever they become the government." The debate in itself was a stark turn for Venezuela, where authorities have for decades denied the country has any political prisoners.
