In October 1962, the GM Pontiac Catalina equipped with the legendary 421 Super Duty engine dominated racetracks across America, but within months this revolutionary powerplant would be banned by General Motors' corporate leadership, ending one of the most remarkable chapters in muscle car history. Under the direction of chief engineer Pete Estes and his protégé John DeLorean, Pontiac engineers created an engine so powerful that it crushed competitors like Chevrolet's 409 and Ford's 406, with legendary driver Fireball Roberts piloting a Super Duty powered Pontiac to victory at the 1962 Daytona 500. This forbidden engine would ultimately give birth to the GTO, often considered the first true muscle car, ensuring that the Super Duty's revolutionary engineering would live on even after its official death.
