Ukraine; Dnipro city; Parus Hotel | UA: м. Дніпро; Готель Парус The Parus Hotel is one of the most recognizable unfinished buildings in Dnipro, located on the Dnipro River embankment. The design was developed between 1972 and 1974 under the direction of architect Vladimir Zuyev, and construction began in 1975. The building was conceived as a large, modern hotel complex with 996 beds and 589 rooms, approximately 114 meters tall and 32 stories. The plan was to be more than just a hotel, but an entire multifunctional complex: with a restaurant, café, conference hall, cinema and concert hall, office space, swimming pool, dock, and parking. The framework was erected fairly quickly, and opening was planned for 1979, but the project encountered financial and organizational difficulties. Work slowed in the late 1980s, and then construction finally halted; Parus remained unfinished in the following decades. Over time, Parus became a symbol of Dnipro—a monument to a failed Soviet megaproject and one of the city's most notorious long-term construction projects. After years of legal wrangling, the building was returned to the city's ownership; in 2022, city authorities announced their intention to demolish the structure. More recent publications continue to describe the structure as abandoned, and its future remains linked to demolition or new development on the site.
