An early-morning crossing on the South Ferry from Shelter Island to North Haven, filmed on one of the coldest days of the season. The Sound was filled with unusual ice formations ...delicate, clustered ice known as "frazil ice", sometimes nicknamed “shuga” or “slurpee” ice. What is Frazil Ice? Frazil ice forms in supercooled, turbulent water when tiny ice crystals develop and remain suspended rather than freezing into a solid sheet. These crystals cluster together, creating a soft, granular texture that can resemble slush. However, the resemblance to clouds floating on the surface cannot be denied. Because it forms in moving water, frazil ice is more common in rivers and tidal currents during extreme cold. Seeing large fields of it across Shelter Island Sound is both rare and visually striking. The South Ferry The South Ferry, operating between Shelter Island and the North Fork, runs year-round and becomes an essential winter link when roads and bridges don’t exist. In cold snaps like this, the ferry pushes steadily through shifting ice, creating a uniquely quiet and atmospheric crossing. #SouthFerry #ShelterIsland #WinterOnTheWater #FrazilIce #FrozenSound #LongIslandWinter #ColdMorning #NatureBreak #OceanIce #WinterCrossing Nature can heal. Nature is a cure to our daily stress, sadness, depression, and an elixir to a world that is moving too fast. The natural world helps to relax, revitalize, rejuvenate, and uplift us. A simple walk in the woods, a trip to the ocean or even a car ride down a tree-lined country road can relieve anxiety and allow us to decompress from our hectic lives. But when we cannot take the opportunity to visit Mother Nature in person, we can take a quick break and enjoy the essence of the experience through peaceful, tranquil snippets of the natural world. Heal yourself, calm yourself, unwind, and take a mental repose with these short videos to give yourself a positive gift in your day.
