A few thoughts on conflict, as it fills our headlines at present: Wars and rumors of war. They happen. They always have. It's not really unusual. It's not about ideology, as much as geography and economics. View conflict as having a technical cause more than a spiritual one. Ego and unprofessionalism makes things worse. When people who lack maturity grow older and more powerful, they compromise credibility. It's not purely black and white. While I'd lean toward not supporting new wars, I also understand that it has relatively little to do with the surface politics, and more to do with preservation of an economic empire - one which everyone in the western world benefits from. The west has been a liberalizing influence, which makes it - while imperfect - far more useful to the advancement of human progress than other, less evolved or more religious/fundamentalist cultures. Part of what is going on in the world is related to a fear of inevitable change, contrasted against forward progress. It's sort of like how a hot and cold front converging at the changing of a season can make a fierce storm.aw Religious extremism, and the hate of it, are both dangerous in their own right - but ultimately, people who believe in things without cause and think their unfounded beliefs should be forced on others are the greater danger. We need to be careful about religious extremism regaining a foothold. Consumerism and macroeconomics are still going in the right direction. Even people who seem very polarized are not as much so as they act. In the end, we're all shopping at the same stores and having similar experiences, even if some "act" like they are staunchly religious. A peaceful attitude toward life is the truest form of religion - and that is something that a part of every faith's philosophy acknowledges. That's the part we need to hang onto through all the storms in life and society.
