In the first video of a three-part series, we go into detail about the rise of the Spanish empire and discuss the Spanish Golden Age. At the dawn of the 16th century, Spain sat atop the world. Over the next century, she would establish herself as the first global empire, with colonies stretching right around the planet. Throughout the 1500s, Spain competed with its Iberian neighbor Portugal in opening trade routes across the oceans. Spanish colonization began with the conquest of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean, a hundred kilometers west of Morocco. The Castillian conquest of the islands began in 1402. The natives of the eight main islands that make up the Canaries resisted the European invaders for almost a century until they were finally subjugated in 1496. During the 15th and 16th centuries, a thriving trade developed across the Atlantic between the Americas and Spain and across the Pacific between East Asia and Mexico via the Philippines. Spanish conquistadores ravaged their way through Central America, decimating the Aztec, Mayan, and Incan empires while bringing huge areas of conquest under Spanish dominion. The Spanish conquistadores had set off with grand hopes of finding their fortunes in gold and other native treasures in the conquered lands. By the 1520s they were extracting large silver deposits from the Guanajuato and Zacatecas regions of Mexico. These riches transformed the flagging Spanish economy. The importation of natural resources from the Americas brought a huge cash influx into the country. This provided the finances for the building of the military capability of the nation which was to be the backbone of its wars in North Africa and Europe over the next two hundred years.
